Growing Scadoxus multiflorus (ska-DOCKS-us
Mull-tee-FLOOR-us) in pots Store the bulb in it's pot over the
winter in a spot that doesn't get under 40 degrees. Do not water.
In the spring, bring out into the warmth and soon you'll see a little green
triangle pushing it's way through the soil. Give the pot a good watering
at this time. Keep the pot in full sun or partial shade, morning sun with
afternoon dappled shade is best.
Soon the plant should flower. The flower will start slowly and last a week
or more, depending on the temperature and amount of sunlight. The red
color of the flower will start to fade, and you may see some green fruit
starting. Let these dry on the plant as long as you can, and then plant
them 1/4" deep in soil to start new plants.
Once the flower is done, enjoy the lovely green leaves for the rest of the
summer. Bring the pot indoors before it gets too cold and the plant may
continue growing until late in the fall or early winter. Give it less
water at this time. The leaves will start to turn yellow and die
back- the bulb is now getting ready for winter. | |
